Literally, in the figurative sense of the word

Mother nature has put her foot down and literally split the island portion of the province in two.
(And why can't people on "the island portion of the province" call "the island portion of the province" but its name, instead of by that stupid circumlocution?

Many geologists postulate that the escarpment above Gambo is one of three divides on the island of Newfoundland left after its formation out of supercontinents way back when (before Confederation, I think). But I doubt a few torrents of rain would succeed in reversing that process any time soon.

there once was a wandering tribe who got puked out by the land,because they were wicked,murderous,conniving liars and cheats.washed away they says...for their wickedness and brazenfaced ways of treating the INDIGENOUS Peoples.it was in one of their old holy books.must be true,question is:is it happening again?
